Big Bass Bonanza

★★★★☆ 4.3 Editor rating

Big Bass Bonanza is one of those games I expected to bounce off in five minutes and ended up keeping on my phone for a couple of weeks. It's built around a cheerful fishing theme, all cartoon lakes and grinning bass, and the whole thing runs on a simple tap-and-spin loop that's easy to pick up during a coffee break. The animations are the real charm here — the little fisherman reacts to what happens on screen, and the water effects are surprisingly nice for such a lightweight app.

Controls are about as minimal as it gets: one big button, a couple of settings tucked into a corner menu, and that's it. Because there's so little to fiddle with, the game lives or dies on its presentation, and I think it mostly wins. The sound design deserves a mention too — the splashes and the plucky background tune are pleasant instead of annoying, which is rare for this kind of casual title.

If I have a complaint, it's that there isn't much depth to chase once you've seen everything the theme has to offer. This is a game for short, relaxed sessions rather than long grinds. Taken on those terms, though, it's a friendly, good-looking way to pass ten minutes.
